HazMobile Info Page

Hazardous waste can't go in the trash! It's the law. Save hazardous waste for one of the free HazMobile household hazardous waste collections. (Some items, like motor oil are accepted at recycling centers. Check the listings by town).

You can take car batteries to a transfer station or auto parts store for recycling.

All collections 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. except Ukiah, which is 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Collections may be cancelled due to severe rain and wind.

Free to households within daily load limit of 15 gallons per vehicle per day, measured by container size.

Businesses must make appointment and pay a fee per gallon which is a direct “pass through” of our disposal cost for various types of hazardous waste.

Items accepted:  motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, gasoline, solvents, paint thinner, oil-based paint, latex paint, household batteries, toxic cleaners, fluorescent light tubes, PCB-containing ballasts, acids, bases, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals.. There is a charge for compressed gas cylinders.

Not accepted: explosives, ammunition, radioactive wastes, medical waste, compressed gas cylinders larger than 5 gallons, vehicle batteries (take them to an auto parts store for recycling).

For more information or to make an appointment, call the Recycling Hotline at 468-9704.

Save the Earth - - - don't release Freon into the air

Your own refrigerator or air conditioner contains "Freon" refrigerant gas that's deadly to the Earth's environment. Freon destroys the ozone layer of the atmosphere that protects us from intense ultraviolet radiation. International treaties, and U.S. law, prohibit any release of freon into the atmosphere. If you need to discard a refrigerator or air conditioner, take it to any disposal site in Mendocino County and the Mendocino Solid Waste Management Authority's technicians will recover the freon for reuse.
